Western’s Merriman Financial Literacy Programis inspired by the award-winning work of Paul Merriman, Class of 1966, now “retired” after a long career as an investment advisor.

Still active as an author, speaker, teacher and founder of the Merriman Financial Educational Foundation, Paul has spent many hours working with the University to develop this program.

Here is Paul’s description of his vision for this endeavor – a vision that we share.

“I sure wish I had known that when I was young!”

That is probably the most frequent comment I’ve heard in more than half a century of helping people with their finances.

Western’s Financial Literacy curriculum is designed to equip Western students with useful knowledge, skills, understanding and resources.

When they leave the university, they will be able to make sound financial decisions, so that they:

  • Will achieve financial independence – and maintain that independence.

  • Will be more likely to achieve their goals in life.

  • Will be able to take advantage of more of the opportunities that come their way.

  • Are much less likely to fall into the trap of unmanageable debts.

  • Are less likely to become victims of financial fraud.

  • Are more likely to become leaders.

  • Will be more successful as investors, and thus more able to be generous to their families and their communities.

  • Will be equipped to pass this knowledge and understanding on to others.

  • Will have less stressful lives.

  • Additionally (according to studies I have read), they will be more likely to succeed in marriage if that is a path they choose.

What does this all add up to? I think it’s this: Adults who are more successful, happier and more fulfilled.

This is a big vision, and there is more work ahead to achieve its promise. I believe that work is worthwhile, and the promise is worth keeping.

Whether you are a student, a parent, a faculty or staff member, an alum or an interested observer, I hope you will find this endeavor worthy of your support.
